The Chromium in Urine test is used to detect and monitor chromium deficiencies or excesses in the body. This test is conducted by IntroLab, a renowned biochemical laboratory in Belgrade, and does not require any special preparation before your visit.

What is Chromium?

Chromium is an essential trace element at physiological concentrations, and as such, it is necessary for the metabolism of carbohydrates and fats. Chromium intoxication occurs through contact or ingestion of chromium trioxide (= chromic acid), sodium chromate, and potassium dichromate, which can be found in chromium-containing dyes.

When Should Chromium in Urine be Measured and How to Interpret the Results?

This biochemical urine test is recommended when there is a suspicion of chromium deficiency or excess in the body. Low levels are typically due to inadequate dietary intake. Chromium deficiency can manifest in the liver, bones, joints, and heart.

High levels of chromium may result from excessive supplement intake over several months. Acute increases can occur from occupational or accidental exposure. Chromium intoxication manifests with clinical symptoms such as:

  • Nail discoloration
  • Hair loss
  • Coagulation disorders
  • Garlic-scented breath

It is important to note that chromium concentrations determined by tests from different manufacturers may vary due to differences in methods and test specifics. It is best to monitor values using one method, i.e., in one laboratory. Do not interpret test results as absolute diagnostic proof.

If low or high levels of chromium are detected in the urine, additional diagnostic tests are necessary to determine the cause and take appropriate measures. Test results should be interpreted in the context of the patient’s clinical picture and in collaboration with specialists.
