Cholesterol is a steroid-structured substance that plays various roles in the body. Blood tests for cholesterol are available at IntroLab in Belgrade, providing essential information about its significance for health.
What is cholesterol?
Cholesterol is crucial for the normal functioning of the body as it is a key component of cell membranes. It also plays a vital role in the synthesis of hormones responsible for growth, development, and reproduction, and in the formation of bile acids which are important for nutrient absorption. The body’s cholesterol levels come from two sources: part is synthesized within the body, and part is ingested through food.
A genetic predisposition for increased cholesterol synthesis, combined with a diet high in saturated fats, can lead to elevated blood cholesterol levels. This can negatively impact health, as excess amounts can deposit in the walls of blood vessels, leading to atherosclerosis. This condition is the basis of many cardiovascular diseases, such as heart disease.
In circulation, cholesterol is found in the form of lipoproteins, particles that contain specific proteins and lipids. The two most important fractions are HDL (high-density lipoprotein) and LDL (low-density lipoprotein). IntroLab offers tests to measure these fractions to assess cardiovascular disease risk. Additionally, the cost of triglycerides and cholesterol tests is affordable.
When is this test used?
Testing is used to assess the risk of cardiovascular diseases and to monitor the effectiveness of lipid-lowering therapy. This test is part of routine medical check-ups, where a comprehensive blood lipid profile is conducted. This profile includes:
- Measuring total cholesterol
- Analyzing HDL cholesterol
- Measuring LDL cholesterol
- Determining triglyceride levels
Testing is periodically performed in individuals at increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. For these individuals, it is necessary to analyze the complete lipid profile as well as additional markers such as:
- Hs-CRP
- Fibrinogen
- Homocysteine
- Apo-A
- Apo-B
- LPa
Additionally, total cholesterol testing is also conducted for those undergoing lipid-lowering therapy to monitor the effectiveness of the treatment.
