CEA analysis is performed at IntroLab in Belgrade, where experts use specialized equipment to detect the levels of this marker in the blood.
What is CEA (general, colon)?
The CEA marker is classified as a universal tumor marker. If the value of this marker is significantly elevated in the blood, it may indicate the presence of malignant disease in the body. However, it should be noted that this elevated value does not provide a specific indication of the location of the organ where the malignant change is occurring.
Elevated CEA levels
Elevated CEA levels can be a sign of several conditions, including colon cancer. CEA levels can also increase with other types of cancer, such as lung cancer, breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, and some types of leukemia. Additionally, elevated CEA levels can be associated with non-cancerous conditions, such as inflammatory bowel diseases, liver diseases, and chronic smokers.
However, it is worth noting that elevated CEA levels are not a definitive sign of cancer. This analysis is useful in monitoring the response to therapy in patients with colon cancer, as well as in detecting possible recurrences after treatment.
Who performs this analysis and when is it done?
This test is usually recommended when there is a suspicion of colon cancer, as well as for monitoring the condition of patients who have already been diagnosed with this type of cancer. The analysis can also be used to assess the effectiveness of therapy and potential recurrence of the disease.
Why is the CEA analysis done?
The CEA analysis is a useful tool in detecting and monitoring colon cancer. Elevated CEA levels can indicate the presence of malignant disease, but also non-cancerous diseases. Although this test is not specific only to colon cancer and is not accurate enough to be used alone for screening, it can help in assessing the effectiveness of therapy and detecting recurrences in patients diagnosed with colon cancer.
