What are Anti-CCP antibodies?
Anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide (Anti-CCP) antibodies are specific antibodies commonly found in the blood of individuals with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic autoimmune disease that primarily affects the joints, leading to swelling, pain, and often progressive joint damage. “Autoimmune” refers to the immune system mistakenly attacking the body’s own cells and tissues.
Anti-CCP antibodies target a protein called citrullinated peptide, which is found in the synovial fluid of the joints.
When is the CCP At test (Rheumatoid Arthritis) needed?
The Anti-CCP antibody test is recommended for individuals showing symptoms that may suggest rheumatoid arthritis, such as:
- Chronic joint inflammation
- Pain
- Swelling
- Stiffness, particularly in the small joints of the hands and feet
In some instances, Anti-CCP antibodies can be detected in the blood years before rheumatoid arthritis symptoms appear, making this test a valuable tool for early diagnosis. It is also useful for tracking disease progression and response to treatment.
Anti-CCP antibodies are highly specific to rheumatoid arthritis, meaning they are rarely found in people without the disease. However, not all rheumatoid arthritis patients will have Anti-CCP antibodies, so this test is often used alongside other tests and clinical evaluations.
Types of Anti-CCP tests
The Anti-CCP test can be conducted in different forms, depending on the method used to detect the antibodies. The two most common types are:
- Anti-CCP2: This second-generation Anti-CCP test is the most widely used. It employs synthetic cyclic citrullinated peptide (CCP) as an antigen to detect Anti-CCP antibodies. The Anti-CCP2 test is highly specific for rheumatoid arthritis and is valuable for early diagnosis.
- Anti-CCP3: This third-generation test uses various citrullinated peptide antigens to detect antibodies, potentially offering increased sensitivity compared to the Anti-CCP2 test.
Both tests are typically performed on a blood sample and provide crucial information for diagnosing rheumatoid arthritis. Your doctor or healthcare provider will determine which test is most appropriate for your specific condition.
