CA 50 is a tumor marker used in medicine for assessing and monitoring colorectal cancer. Also known as colorectal antigen 50, it can be elevated in the presence of colon cancer, especially in the later stages of the disease. The CA 50 test provides additional information that can be useful in diagnosis, monitoring therapy, and detecting recurrences in patients with colorectal carcinoma. The IntroLab Vrachar laboratory is there to guide you through the process.

What is CA 50?

CA 50 is a tumor marker related to a specific antigen that can be found in the blood of patients. This antigen, also known as colorectal antigen 50 (CA 50), is characteristic of colon cancer.

CA 50 analysis: Clinical significance

Although elevated concentrations of colorectal antigen 50 primarily indicate the presence of colon cancer, its elevated levels can also suggest the presence of pancreatic cancer.

Extrahepatic cholestasis, a condition characterized by disrupted bile flow outside the liver, can also affect the levels of this antigen. Elevated levels of CA 50 can occur as a result of bile duct blockages or other pathological changes affecting bile flow. Therefore, measuring CA 50 can be used as an additional marker for assessing extrahepatic cholestasis.

Hepatocellular jaundice, a condition resulting from liver damage and impaired bilirubin excretion function, can also influence CA 50 levels. In this case, elevated values occur as a result of hepatocellular dysfunction and the accumulation of bilirubin in the blood.

Reference values

Typically, normal reference values for CA 50 range from below 20 U/mL to 35 U/mL. However, it is important to emphasize that these values can vary depending on factors such as age, sex, population, and the method of analysis used.

It is recommended that the interpretation of CA 50 results take into account the reference values specific to the laboratory where the testing was conducted. It is important that the results are interpreted in the context of the patient’s clinical picture and that other relevant factors are considered to obtain an accurate diagnosis and determine appropriate treatment.
