About the C3 Complement Parameter

C3 complement is a crucial part of the complement system, which belongs to the innate immune system. This system consists of about 60 different proteins that are essential for identifying, destroying, and removing foreign pathogens like bacteria and viruses, as well as damaged cells and proteins within the body.

C3 complement is produced in various parts of the body, including the liver, macrophages, fibroblasts, lymphocytes, and skin. It is involved in a series of reactions that lead to the formation of antigen-antibody complexes. The enzyme C3 convertase breaks down C3 complement into C3a and C3b. This breakdown, along with interactions with other complement system components, allows the body to mount an effective defense against infections.

Imbalances or dysfunctions in C3 complement levels can lead to various issues. In some cases of recurrent infections, C3 complement levels may decrease. Such imbalances can be indicators of immune dysfunction or systemic diseases.

When is a C3 Complement test indicated?
