The C1 Inhibitor analysis, provided by the renowned IntroLab laboratory in Belgrade, is a crucial laboratory test for assessing certain aspects of our immune system. This test is specifically designed to measure the level and functionality of the C1 Inhibitor.

What is C1 Inhibitor?

C1 Inhibitor, also known as C1 esterase inhibitor, is a key protein that controls the activation of the complement system, one of the main parts of our immune system. This regulation is vital to prevent uncontrolled and excessive activation of the complement system, which could lead to damage to the body’s own tissues and cells. A deficiency or inadequate function of the C1 Inhibitor can lead to hereditary angioedema (HAE).

When is this test needed?

The C1 Inhibitor test should be done when a patient shows symptoms that suggest hereditary angioedema. These symptoms can include:

  • recurrent swelling of the skin
  • swelling in the mouth, throat, abdomen, or limbs
  • abdominal pain

This test is also used to monitor the effectiveness of therapeutic protocols in patients who have already been diagnosed with HAE.

How are the results interpreted?

The results of the C1 Inhibitor test can be classified as normal, elevated, or reduced levels. Normal values suggest that the concentration of C1 Inhibitor in the blood is usual, indicating that the immune system is functioning properly. Reduced values may indicate the presence of hereditary angioedema, while elevated values can be an indicator of other medical conditions.

Subtypes of C1 Inhibitor Analysis

There are two main types of C1 Inhibitor analysis:

  • a quantitative test, which measures the amount of C1 Inhibitor in the blood,
  • a functional test, which assesses the functionality of the C1 Inhibitor

Both tests are often used together to provide a more complete picture of the immune system’s function.
