At IntroLab laboratory in Belgrade, we are dedicated to providing these sophisticated tests with the highest standards of accuracy and professionalism. Using the C1 Inactivator analysis, our team of experts can provide crucial information that may be key in diagnosing and monitoring certain conditions related to the immune system.

What is C1 Inhibitor?

C1 inhibitor, also known as C1 esterase inactivator (C1-INH), is a protein in the body that plays a crucial role in regulating the complement and contact systems, two important parts of our immune system. It prevents excessive activation of these systems and helps maintain balance in our body. A deficiency of this protein can lead to certain health problems.

Why is it determined, and who should it be determined for?

C1 inactivator analysis is most commonly used to diagnose hereditary angioedema (HAE), a rare but serious disease that causes swelling of tissues in various parts of the body. It can also be used to monitor therapy in patients with this condition. This test is especially important for individuals who show symptoms such as unexplained swelling of the skin, gastrointestinal tract, or respiratory system.

How are the results interpreted?

Test results can be classified as normal, elevated, or reduced levels of C1 inactivator.

  • Normal values suggest that the concentration of C1 inactivator in the blood is usual, indicating that the immune system is functioning properly.
  • Reduced values may indicate the presence of hereditary angioedema. This condition is usually diagnosed when C1 inactivator levels are significantly lowered.
  • Elevated C1 inactivator levels are rare but can occur in certain conditions, such as some malignant diseases.

Preparation for analysis

No special preparation is required for the C1 inactivator test. Patients can continue to take their usual medications and food, unless otherwise directed by their doctor. It is always a good idea to check with your doctor to see if your medications might affect the test results.

Types of C1 Inhibitor analysis

There are two main types of C1 inactivator analysis:

  • Quantitative test – This test measures the total amount of C1 inactivator in a blood sample. If the level of this protein is low, it may indicate hereditary angioedema.
  • Functional test – This test evaluates how the C1 inactivator functions. Sometimes, a person may have normal levels of this protein, but the protein does not function properly, which can also lead to symptoms of hereditary angioedema.

Both tests are often used together to provide a comprehensive picture of the immune system’s function.
