The bicarbonate analysis, conducted by IntroLab, a renowned laboratory in Belgrade, is a vital part of the process for monitoring the acid-base balance in the body. Blood electrolyte analysis, in combination with this, is crucial for assessing homeostatic mechanisms, as well as for maintaining optimal health and balance in the body.
Bicarbonates – Details
Bicarbonates, in harmony with other electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, and chloride, play an important role in maintaining acid-base balance and water homeostasis in the body.
When is bicarbonate analysis indicated?
Bicarbonate analysis is recommended for people who show symptoms such as breathing problems, reduced consciousness, prolonged vomiting, and weakness, which are often associated with metabolic and respiratory disorders, such as acidosis and alkalosis.
Lower bicarbonate levels
Low bicarbonate levels can indicate the presence of metabolic acidosis, as seen in diabetes and ketoacidosis. Therefore, it can also be considered one of the blood tests for diabetes. Additionally, lower bicarbonate values are noticeable in respiratory alkalosis, which can occur due to hyperventilation.
Elevated bicarbonate levels
Elevated bicarbonate values may indicate the presence of respiratory acidosis with CO2 retention or metabolic alkalosis, which can occur as a result of prolonged vomiting.
