The analysis of benzodiazepines in urine is a test used to confirm the presence of benzodiazepines, a class of drugs that depress the central nervous system. These drugs, also known as sedatives, sleeping pills, and muscle relaxants, are often used for sedating patients, easing anxiety, preventing seizures, and relaxing muscle spasms. However, these drugs can also be used illegally, which can lead to addiction. This drug test in urine is an integral part of the services provided by the private laboratory in Belgrade, IntroLab.

Why is testing for benzodiazepines performed?

Testing for benzodiazepines is carried out for several reasons. It can be used to detect overdoses, even if the drug is prescribed. Symptoms of an overdose may include:

  • Confusion
  • Loss of muscle control
  • Slurred speech
  • Low blood pressure
  • Slow or shallow breathing
  • Seizures
  • Fainting
  • Cardiac arrest

Additionally, this test can be useful if there is a suspicion of abuse of these drugs.

How are benzodiazepines measured in urine?

This test is usually performed via biochemical analysis of urine. A urine sample is collected and sent to the laboratory, where it is analyzed for the presence of benzodiazepines or their metabolites.

What do the test results mean?

A positive test result means that the drug metabolite was found in the urine at the time the sample was taken. The time it takes for it to appear in urine varies from drug to drug. In some cases, its presence can be detected just a few minutes after consumption, and sometimes it can take a couple of days. How long a metabolite of this class of drugs remains present in the urine depends on the half-life of the specific drug. For example, diazepam can be detected in the sample even several weeks after the last dose.

Risks and limitations

Some other drugs can cause a false-positive result in benzodiazepine tests. These drugs include tolmetin, naproxen, etodolac, fenoprofen, oxaprozin, and sertraline. Also, it is important to note that testing for benzodiazepines cannot precisely determine the amount of drug used, nor can it prove whether a person is actively under its influence.

Preparation for the test

Generally, no special preparation is needed for this test. However, it is important to inform your doctor before testing about all medications, herbal supplements, vitamins, and dietary supplements you are taking. This includes over-the-counter medications and any illegal drugs you may be using.
