The Bartonella IgM At test is a reliable method for detecting infections caused by Bartonella bacteria. At IntroLab in Belgrade, we aim to offer clear and accurate information about this test, helping you understand its significance and how it works.

What is Bartonella IgM At?

Bartonella IgM At refers to specific antibodies that our immune system produces in response to an infection with Bartonella bacteria. Bartonella is a genus of gram-negative bacteria responsible for various diseases in humans, such as cat scratch disease and bacillary angiomatosis.

Immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies are the first to be produced when an infection occurs, making them key indicators of active or recent infections. The presence of Bartonella IgM antibodies in the blood suggests an active or recent infection with Bartonella bacteria.

How is Bartonella transmitted?

Bartonella is primarily spread through bites from insects like fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, and lice. It can also be transmitted through contact with contaminated blood or bodily fluids, especially in individuals with weakened immune systems.

Symptoms of Bartonella infection

Symptoms of Bartonella infection can vary from mild to severe. Common symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Redness and swelling at the insect bite site
  • Swollen lymph nodes

Consequences of infection

An infection with Bartonella bacteria can have a range of effects, depending on the specific Bartonella strain and the patient’s overall health. Short-term effects may present as flu-like symptoms, while long-term consequences can include chronic infections and complications such as endocarditis, neurological disorders, vision problems, and joint issues.

Purpose of this test

The Bartonella IgM antibody test is usually performed to diagnose a Bartonella infection, particularly when the patient shows symptoms or has been at risk of exposure.

When should this test be performed?

The Bartonella IgM antibody test is advised when a patient shows symptoms indicative of a Bartonella infection, particularly if they have been exposed to potential carriers such as ticks or fleas.

Interpreting the results

A positive Bartonella IgM antibody result suggests a recent or ongoing infection. A negative result could indicate that the person is not infected or that the immune system has not yet produced detectable levels of antibodies.

Test preparation

Typically, no special preparation is needed for this test. The patient should inform their doctor about any medications they are currently taking.
