The anti-sperm antibodies (ASA) test, available at IntroLab in Belgrade, is a specialized diagnostic test used to detect the presence of antibodies against sperm in the blood, seminal fluid, or cervical mucus. These antibodies can cause infertility in both men and women.
What are anti-sperm antibodies?
Anti-sperm antibodies (Anti-Sperm At) are specific autoantibodies that target proteins on the surface of sperm. These antibodies can impair sperm motility and their ability to fertilize an egg, leading to fertility problems.
When is this test performed?
The anti-sperm antibodies (ASA) test is especially recommended in the following situations:
- Preoperative Evaluation Before Insemination: This test is crucial for preoperative assessment before insemination. If agglutination (where sperm clump together) is detected, insemination may be ineffective as the sperm will form “clumps” before reaching the egg.
- Before In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Procedures: If anti-sperm antibodies are present, this test can help doctors determine the most suitable IVF procedure.
- After Testicular Injuries: This includes injuries such as hydrocele or other conditions that may stimulate the production of anti-sperm antibodies. The test can provide essential information for developing a treatment plan or considering possible interventions.
Interpretation of results
When interpreting the results of the anti-sperm antibodies (ASA) test, a reference value is typically set at 50% or higher. If 50% or more of the sperm in the patient’s sample have associated anti-sperm antibodies, it is usually considered a positive result, indicating a potential immunological factor contributing to infertility.
However, these reference values can vary depending on the laboratory and the specific testing method used. Moreover, the presence of anti-sperm antibodies is not the only possible cause of fertility issues, and the absence of these antibodies does not guarantee fertility. A comprehensive fertility evaluation, including other laboratory tests and clinical assessments, is always recommended.
Why do anti-sperm antibodies appear?
Anti-sperm antibodies can develop due to past infections, injuries, or surgical procedures on the genitalia, such as a vasectomy. In some cases, the immune system may produce these antibodies without any apparent cause.
