The ANCA-p (anti-MPO) test, available at IntroLab in Belgrade, is used to identify specific autoantibodies in the blood. These autoantibodies, known as perinuclear antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (p-ANCA), target myeloperoxidase (MPO). They are typically associated with certain vasculitic and autoimmune conditions, such as microscopic polyangiitis and chronic idiopathic ulcerative colitis.

What is p-ANCA (Anti-MPO)?

p-ANCA, or anti-MPO antibodies, are specific autoantibodies used in medicine as markers for certain autoimmune diseases. These antibodies target myeloperoxidase (MPO), an enzyme found in neutrophil leukocytes, a type of white blood cell.

When and who should get tested for p-ANCA (Anti-MPO)?

Testing for p-ANCA (Anti-MPO) antibodies is especially important for individuals suspected of having conditions such as microscopic polyangiitis or chronic idiopathic ulcerative colitis. This test is also used to monitor the progression of these diseases and the effectiveness of treatment.

It is recommended to perform this test if there are symptoms that may indicate the aforementioned diseases. These symptoms include:

  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Persistent fatigue
  • Fever
  • Joint pain and swelling
  • Nosebleeds
  • Red spots on the skin
  • Coughing, with or without blood
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain

How is the test performed?

This test requires a blood sample from the patient. Blood is typically drawn from a vein in the arm and sent to a laboratory for analysis to detect the presence of p-ANCA (anti-MPO) antibodies.

How are the test results interpreted?

The results are interpreted based on standardized reference values for this test. Elevated levels of p-ANCA (anti-MPO) suggest the potential presence of certain autoimmune diseases, while lower levels are usually not clinically significant unless they contradict the patient’s clinical symptoms.

Specifics of ANCA antibodies

ANCA antibodies exist in several variants, including p-ANCA (anti-MPO) and c-ANCA (anti-PR3). Each type of antibody can suggest certain diseases. However, it’s important to remember that the presence of these antibodies does not definitively confirm a disease; a test can be negative even if the disease is present, and a positive test does not guarantee the presence of the disease. Results should be interpreted in the context of the patient’s symptoms, medical history, and other diagnostic findings.
