Urine analysis
Alpha-amylase in urine is one of the parameters that can be analyzed at IntroLab, a leading biochemical laboratory in Belgrade. In this text, we will explain in detail what alpha-amylase is exactly and why this urine analysis is of high importance for patient health.
What is alpha-amylase in urine?
Alpha-amylase is an enzyme typically found in the pancreas and salivary glands. The presence of this enzyme in urine can indicate certain health issues, including disorders of the pancreas, kidneys, or other organs.
Who performs the analysis?
This test can be conducted within the facilities of the IntroLab laboratory. Our team of experts, consisting of experienced laboratory technicians, performs this analysis with a high level of accuracy and reliability.
When is the analysis of alpha-amylase in urine recommended?
Analysis of alpha-amylase in urine is often recommended when there is suspicion of a pathological condition associated with the pancreas, such as pancreatitis, pancreatic tumors, or other disorders. It may also be recommended when there is suspicion of damage to the kidneys or other organs.
Interpreting the results
The interpretation of the results of alpha-amylase in urine can be specific to each patient and depends on many factors, including symptoms, medical history, and other biochemical urine analyses. However, here are a few specific examples of result interpretations:
- A normal level of alpha-amylase in urine usually ranges from 2-8 U/L. In this case, it indicates normal functioning of the pancreas and other organs that produce this enzyme. These results are typically expected and are not an indication for further investigation or therapy.
- Elevated levels of alpha-amylase in urine can indicate possible medical issues. For example, if the level of alpha-amylase is significantly elevated, it could be a sign of acute pancreatitis that requires urgent medical intervention. Other possible causes of elevated alpha-amylase in urine can include tumor changes in the pancreas, blockages in the pancreatic duct, or other diseases.
- Decreased levels of alpha-amylase in urine are not common, but they also indicate potential problems. For example, it could be related to damage to the pancreas, reduced enzyme production, or other metabolic disorders.

Sample: Urine
Reverse time: 4h
Preparation: Bring fresh, first morning urine (midstream), in a urine bottle. Clean the external genitalia before collecting the sample. The minimum amount of urine needed for analysis is 10-15 mL. The urine sample must be analyzed within 2 hours of sampling or after 4 hours if stored in the refrigerator. Women should not collect urine during menstruation.
