The urine aldosterone analysis is a test that measures the level of aldosterone, a hormone produced by the adrenal glands, in the urine. Aldosterone helps regulate the levels of sodium and potassium in the body, which affects blood pressure control and the balance of fluids and electrolytes in the blood. This analysis is crucial at the IntroLab laboratory in Belgrade, where various biochemical urine analyses are performed.

Why is urine aldosterone analysis performed?

This test is conducted for several reasons:

  • To measure the amount of aldosterone that the adrenal glands release into the body.
  • To check for a tumor on the adrenal glands.
  • To determine the cause of high blood pressure or low potassium levels. This is done when there is suspicion of overactive adrenal glands or abnormal growth of the same.

How to prepare for the analysis?

Before the analysis, it is necessary to consume food with a normal amount of sodium (2,300 mg per day) at least 2 weeks beforehand. Also, consumption of natural licorice root should be avoided during the same period. In consultation with your doctor, there may be a possibility that you will stop taking certain medications for some time before testing.

How is the analysis performed?

This test is done at home. It involves collecting all urine produced over a 24-hour period. The first-morning urine is not saved, but it marks the start of the 24-hour period. During the next 24 hours, all urine is collected in a special container. The container with urine is kept in the refrigerator. After 24 hours, the last urine is added to the container, and the time is recorded, then it is taken to the laboratory for analysis.

Results

Each laboratory has different reference values for normal aldosterone levels, so it is important that the results are interpreted by the laboratory’s professional staff or your doctor.

High values

High aldosterone levels can be caused by various conditions, including:

A tumor on the adrenal glands (Conn’s syndrome)
Heart failure
Kidney disease
Liver disease
Preeclampsia, a condition that occurs during pregnancy and causes high blood pressure
Certain types of medications used to treat high blood pressure

Low values

Low aldosterone levels can be caused by:

Addison’s disease
Kidney diseases, such as those often seen in people with diabetes
Treatment with heparin, a medication that helps prevent the formation of blood clots

It is important to note that the results of the urine aldosterone analysis alone cannot provide a definitive diagnosis. They are often used in combination with other tests and clinical findings to make an accurate diagnosis.

Vrsta uzorka i vreme kada se uzima uzorak

Sample: 24h urine

Reverse time: Up to 16 days

Preparation: Prepare a bottle for collecting 24-hour urine (assess whether one or more 2-liter bottles are needed). Discard the first morning urine portion (do not pour it into the bottle). Collect all other urine portions during the day and night in the bottle. Add the first morning portion of the next day to the bottle and deliver the total amount of urine to the laboratory for analysis. For certain analyses, it is necessary to first pour a preservative into the bottle – ask in the laboratory for the procedure.
