The TSH analysis is one of the thyroid hormone tests frequently used in the diagnosis and monitoring of individuals with symptoms of hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, as well as in those with a previously diagnosed thyroid disorder, to track therapy. TSH is sometimes determined as part of routine check-ups to assess overall health. Fortunately, the biochemical laboratory in Belgrade, IntroLab, allows you to perform this analysis to evaluate your hormonal status precisely.
TSH – Definition
TSH is a hormone produced in the anterior pituitary gland and plays a vital role in regulating thyroid hormones. TSH synthesis is stimulated by low concentrations of thyroid hormones and TRH (a hormone produced in the hypothalamus).
Normally, there is an inverse relationship between TSH and thyroid hormones in the pituitary-hypothalamus link. In fact, a low concentration of TSH leads to high levels of thyroid hormones, while a high concentration of TSH indicates a low concentration of these hormones.
When is TSH analysis important?
Determining TSH levels is useful in diagnosing and monitoring therapy for hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. It is often determined together with thyroid hormones (T3/fT3 and T4/fT4). Biochemical analyses of this type are also indicated during pregnancy and in newborns for postnatal screening.
What do the results indicate?
The results of the TSH analysis can indicate various conditions. Here are some possible interpretations:
- Elevated TSH levels: High TSH values usually indicate hypothyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones. This can be due to a problem in the thyroid gland or a disorder in the pituitary gland or hypothalamus.
- Lowered TSH levels: Low TSH values may indicate hyperthyroidism, meaning the thyroid gland is producing too much thyroid hormone. This can also be caused by problems in the thyroid gland or hormone regulation in the pituitary/hypothalamus.
- Normal TSH levels: Normal TSH values usually indicate normal thyroid function. However, it is important that TSH analysis results are interpreted together with other thyroid hormones to get a more complete picture.

Sample: Serum (venous blood)
Reverse time: 4h
Preparation: Individuals who use thyroid hormones as therapy should follow their doctor's instructions regarding the timing of medication intake. Typically, a blood sample is taken just before the next dose. For individuals not on therapy, special preparation is not necessary, but it is preferable that sampling is done between meals. Individuals suffering from acute illnesses are advised not to test for thyroid hormones until they have recovered from the illness.
