The uric acid blood test is a diagnostic tool used to identify and monitor various kidney and metabolic disorders. This test is often performed to diagnose and monitor the effectiveness of treatment in cases such as gout, kidney diseases, metabolic syndrome, and other related conditions. IntroLab, a specialized medical laboratory in Vračar, can conduct this test to provide relevant information for the diagnosis and treatment of patients.

When is this test useful?

This test is used in the diagnosis and treatment of various kidney and metabolic disorders, such as:

  • Renal insufficiency
  • Gout
  • Leukemia
  • Psoriasis
  • Starvation or other conditions leading to weight loss

It can also be used to monitor patients undergoing cytotoxic therapy.

What do low and high Uric Acid levels in the blood indicate?

Low uric acid levels, known as hypouricemia, can occur due to decreased production of uric acid in certain hereditary conditions, AIDS, certain malignant diseases, Fanconi syndrome, and diabetes mellitus.

On the other hand, high levels in the blood, known as hyperuricemia, can be classified as primary or secondary. Primary hyperuricemia most commonly occurs as an idiopathic or familial condition where the excretion of uric acid through the tubules is reduced. Secondary hyperuricemia can be associated with increased purine intake and certain conditions such as:

  • Renal insufficiency
  • Hemolytic disease
  • Myeloproliferative disease
  • Psoriasis
  • Type I glycogen storage disease
  • Polycythemia vera
  • Excessive alcohol intake
  • Lead poisoning
  • Chemotherapy
  • Diet
