The iodine blood analysis is a laboratory test that measures the amount of iodine in the blood. Iodine is a trace element essential for the normal functioning of the thyroid gland and the production of thyroid hormones. Irregularities in iodine levels can indicate various health issues, including problems with the thyroid gland.
IntroLab is a blood drawing laboratory in Belgrade that, in addition to standard blood analyses, allows patients to monitor iodine levels in the bloodstream.
Who is the iodine analysis indicated for?
The blood iodine analysis is often recommended for people who show symptoms associated with thyroid hormone imbalance, including fatigue, weight changes, depression, concentration issues, and others. Additionally, the test can be useful for assessing iodine nutritional status, especially in pregnant women, nursing mothers, and individuals on restrictive diets. Therefore, measuring iodine can be one of the more crucial blood analyses for pregnant women.
Interpretation of blood iodine analysis results
Your doctor will interpret the results in the context of your symptoms, medical history, and other test results. Generally, a low iodine level may indicate a dietary iodine deficiency, while a high level may indicate excessive iodine intake or potential health issues. Elevated levels occur in:
- Thyroid gland disorders: Certain thyroid conditions, such as Graves’ disease, can cause increased release of thyroid hormones, which may lead to elevated iodine levels.
- Renal insufficiency: The kidneys play a key role in regulating blood iodine levels. In people with impaired kidney function, iodine levels may be elevated.
- Consumption of amiodarone: This medication, used to treat cardiac arrhythmias, contains high levels of iodine. For this reason, it can cause elevated iodine levels in the blood.
