Why are chlorides important?

Chlorides, in combination with other electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, and bicarbonates, play a crucial role in maintaining the body’s acid-base status and water balance. Therefore, a blood electrolyte analysis, alongside chloride analysis, is a common test.

Blood chloride analysis: Indications

Chloride analysis is recommended for people undergoing routine medical check-ups (where it is often measured together with sodium, potassium, and bicarbonates), those exhibiting symptoms of diseases (such as heart, kidney, adrenal gland diseases, etc.) that can cause electrolyte imbalance, and for monitoring the effectiveness of treatment for these conditions.

Interpretation of results

Decreased blood chloride levels, a condition known as hypochloremia, can be a sign of various health issues. This can include excessive vomiting or diarrhea, sweating, burns, chronic lung diseases, or certain kidney diseases or metabolic alkalosis.

Increased chloride levels, known as hyperchloremia, can also indicate certain health problems. These problems can include dehydration, certain kidney diseases, and metabolic acidosis. Metabolic acidosis is a disorder that occurs when blood or other body fluid is excessively acidic. Higher chloride levels are also present in hyperparathyroidism, a condition that arises when the parathyroid glands produce too much hormone.
