At IntroLab our mission is to provide accurate and reliable analyses to help maintain and improve our patients’ health. One of our key tests, essential for understanding and managing certain health conditions, is the dihydrotestosterone test.

What is dihydrotestosterone?

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a steroid hormone belonging to the androgen group. It is crucial for the development of male characteristics and circulates in the plasma bound to proteins. DHT is the primary androgen responsible for the growth and development of the prostate. Additionally, this hormone contributes to hair loss in both men and women.

When is DHT measured?

DHT levels are measured in various situations, including:

  • Klinefelter Syndrome: Lower levels compared to the healthy male population.
  • Idiopathic Hirsutism: Higher levels in about 40% of patients.
  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS): Higher levels in about 35% of patients.
  • Prostate Cancer: In certain types of prostate cancer (especially stage D), measuring DHT can help predict the response to anti-androgen therapy.
  • Congenital Absence of Both Testes (Anorchia): Extremely low plasma DHT levels.

Sampling and preparation for the test

A venous blood sample is required for the DHT test. No special preparation is needed unless your doctor advises otherwise.

Interpreting results

The results of the dihydrotestosterone test will be interpreted by your physician, who will consider your medical history and the reasons for the test. DHT test results alone are not enough to make a diagnosis. The doctor will also take into account other factors, such as symptoms, medical history, and results from other tests, before reaching a diagnosis.
