The analysis of direct bilirubin blood levels is applied to individuals who exhibit signs and symptoms of liver damage, biliary tract obstruction, liver-related metabolic disorders, hemolytic anemias, and in newborns, to assess direct bilirubin levels. This analysis can be performed quickly and efficiently at the private laboratory in Belgrade, IntroLab.
About the parameter
Bilirubin is a yellow pigment formed from the normal breakdown of heme, a component of hemoglobin found in red blood cells and used to transport oxygen. The liver plays a crucial role in further processing bilirubin so that the body can eliminate it.
When is the analysis of blood direct bilirubin indicated?
Indications for determining the levels of direct bilirubin include:
- Signs and symptoms of liver damage: Individuals showing signs such as jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), dark urine, pale stools, and fatigue may undergo direct bilirubin analysis to assess liver function and identify potential damage.
- Biliary tract obstruction: In cases of suspected biliary tract obstruction, direct bilirubin analysis can provide information about the level of bilirubin directly excreted in bile, which can indicate the presence of blockage or other problems in the biliary system.
- Metabolic disorders related to the liver: Individuals with metabolic disorders associated with liver function, such as Gilbert’s syndrome or Dubin-Johnson syndrome, may undergo direct bilirubin analysis to assess their metabolic balance and identify potential disorders.
- Hemolytic anemias: Patients with hemolytic anemias, where the breakdown of red blood cells is accelerated, may have elevated levels of direct bilirubin. The analysis of direct bilirubin can help identify and monitor these conditions.
- Newborns with jaundice: Direct bilirubin analysis is often used to monitor bilirubin levels in newborns to identify jaundice and track its progress.
