What is androstenedione?

Androstenedione is a steroid hormone naturally produced in the body, primarily in the adrenal glands, ovaries, and testes. It is an intermediate in the synthesis of male and female sex hormones, including testosterone and estrogen. In medicine, androstenedione is often used as a biomarker to assess adrenal gland function and sex hormone production.
