Discover your hormonal status and reproductive health by measuring androstenedione levels at IntroLab. We provide reliable results for more accurate diagnosis and monitoring of endocrine disorders.

What is androstenedione?

Androstenedione is a steroid hormone naturally produced in the body, primarily in the adrenal glands, ovaries, and testes. It is an intermediate in the synthesis of male and female sex hormones, including testosterone and estrogen. In medicine, androstenedione is often used as a biomarker to assess adrenal gland function and sex hormone production. Its blood concentrations can be useful for diagnosing and monitoring conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), adrenal hyperplasia, and adrenal gland tumors.

Androstenedione plays a crucial role in the reproductive system and sexual development. In men, it converts to testosterone, the key male sex hormone responsible for the development of male characteristics such as muscle growth, a deeper voice, and sexual function. In women, androstenedione can convert to estrogen, the primary female sex hormone.

Additionally, androstenedione levels can be linked to certain health conditions. Elevated levels can be associated with PCOS, which may cause irregular menstruation, increased hair growth, and fertility problems. Conversely, decreased levels can indicate adrenal insufficiency or other endocrine disorders.

When is this testing done?

Measuring androstenedione levels is typically part of the diagnostic process and is used to monitor treatment for various disorders. Androstenedione testing can also be valuable in assessing the risk of certain cancers, such as breast cancer and ovarian cancer.
