The Von Willebrand factor antigen test is used to diagnose Von Willebrand disease, the most common hereditary bleeding disorder. This disease results from a deficiency or reduced function of the Von Willebrand factor, which is essential for normal blood clotting. Von Willebrand disease occurs in approximately one in 800 to 1,000 people and affects both sexes equally. It typically manifests in early childhood, making early diagnosis crucial. IntroLab, a blood testing laboratory, can assist with this diagnosis.
When is the Von Willebrand Factor Antigen test indicated?
This blood test is indicated in the following situations:
- Suspected Von Willebrand Disease: The test is used when there is a suspicion of Von Willebrand disease, often indicated by a history of prolonged bleeding or other symptoms associated with impaired Von Willebrand factor function.
- Unexplained Prolonged Bleeding: If a patient experiences unexplained prolonged bleeding, especially with other hemostasis-related symptoms, this test can assess the levels and function of the Von Willebrand factor.
- Tendency to Bruise and Bleed: Individuals prone to bruising, prolonged bleeding from minor cuts, or heavy menstrual bleeding may need this test. It can identify a possible deficiency or reduced function of the Von Willebrand factor.
- Risk Assessment Before Surgery: For patients with known or suspected Von Willebrand disease, the test is crucial before surgical procedures to assess the risk of prolonged bleeding and plan appropriate therapy.
Interpretation of Results
A normal level of Von Willebrand factor antigen in the blood typically indicates an adequate amount and function of the Von Willebrand factor. This is the expected result in healthy individuals.
A reduced level of Von Willebrand factor antigen may suggest the presence of Von Willebrand disease or other conditions affecting the synthesis and function of this factor.
In rare cases, the test may show an elevated level of Von Willebrand factor antigen. This can result from factors such as inflammation or physical stress, which can increase the production of the Von Willebrand factor in the body.
It’s important to note that there are different types of Von Willebrand disease, and a diagnosis often cannot be made based solely on this test.
