Allergology
Allergy to reed particularly affects individuals who live near wetlands, rivers, or lakes where this plant naturally grows. The Reed G7 test is available at IntroLab in Belgrade, providing accurate detection of an allergy to reed pollen.
What is Reed?
Reed (Phragmites australis) is a tall perennial plant that grows in wet and marshy areas along rivers, lakes, and ponds. Known for its long stalks and feathery flower clusters, reed can reach several meters in height and forms dense colonies that play an essential role in ecosystems by stabilizing soil, filtering water, and providing shelter for numerous animal species. Despite its ecological benefits, reed pollen can trigger allergic reactions in individuals sensitive to pollen.
Symptoms of reed pollen allergy
Reed allergy can cause various unpleasant symptoms, including:
- Sneezing and runny nose
- Itchy and watery eyes
- Coughing and throat irritation
- Difficulty breathing and asthma-like symptoms
- Rash and skin irritation
For individuals with more severe allergies, symptoms may include significant respiratory reactions that interfere with daily activities and reduce quality of life.
Testing for reed allergy – Reed G7
During the Reed G7 test, a blood sample is taken and analyzed to measure the level of antibodies specific to reed pollen.
Treatment and management of reed allergy symptoms
Treatment for reed allergy often includes antihistamines to relieve symptoms, nasal corticosteroids to reduce inflammation, and inhalers for more severe respiratory issues. In cases of stronger allergic reactions, immunotherapy may be used to gradually decrease sensitivity to the allergen. It is also recommended to avoid areas with abundant reed growth during its flowering season to reduce exposure.
