Testing for the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is an essential step in diagnosing infections caused by this virus. Whether you suspect an EBV infection or want to assess your immune status regarding this virus, scheduling a test at IntroLab in Belgrade can be your first step towards gaining a clearer understanding of your health.

When is the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) test performed?

The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) test is usually conducted when there is suspicion of an EBV infection. The most common tests involve serological blood tests to check for the presence of antibodies specific to EBV. In cases of suspected severe complications or spread of the infection, additional tests may include:

  • Nasopharyngeal swab to detect viral DNA or RNA
  • Cerebrospinal fluid analysis in cases of suspected neurological complications
  • Synovial fluid analysis when rheumatic manifestations are suspected
  • Amniotic fluid analysis in pregnant women to assess the potential transmission of the virus to the fetus
  • Effusion analysis when pleural or pericardial involvement is suspected
  • Sputum analysis in cases of respiratory symptoms

The presence of EBV in these samples can help diagnose the infection and determine its extent, guiding appropriate treatment and patient monitoring.

What is Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)?

The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), also known as human herpesvirus 4 (HHV-4), is one of the most common viruses that infect humans. It is widespread globally, and most people will be exposed to EBV at some point in their lives. EBV was first identified in the mid-20th century in patients with Burkitt’s lymphoma, and since then, it has been linked to various diseases, including infectious mononucleosis, certain cancers like nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and other immune disorders.

EBV is transmitted through saliva, which is why it is often referred to as the “kissing disease.” Once inside the body, the virus infects the mucosal cells of the throat and then spreads to B lymphocytes, where it can remain latent (inactive) for years. During the latent phase, EBV can cause epigenetic changes in host cells, which may contribute to the development of malignant diseases. It is important to note that although EBV infection is very common, most people will not develop severe symptoms or complications related to the virus. Additionally, while there is no specific cure for EBV, its symptoms can be treated and managed with appropriate medical care.

What are the symptoms?

Infection with the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) can cause a range of symptoms depending on the age and overall health of the individual. Some common symptoms include:

  • Chronic fatigue
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Headache
  • Weakness and muscle pain
  • Enlarged spleen or liver
  • Rash
  • Night sweats

Symptoms can vary in severity and duration. Some people may experience mild symptoms that resolve within a few days, while others may have more severe symptoms that last several weeks or even months.
