IntroLab offers a full range of diagnostic and analysis services, including specialized screenings for Candida albicans, a fungus commonly found in the human body.

What is Candida albicans?

Candida albicans is a type of fungus that is normally present in the human body, most commonly in the mouth, on the skin, in the digestive tract, and in the vaginal area. This fungus is usually harmless and is part of the normal microflora. However, its excessive growth leads to the development of candidiasis, which can be triggered by the use of antibacterial or corticosteroid medications, as well as oral contraceptives. Additionally, certain health conditions such as diabetes, thyroid and parathyroid dysfunction, malignant diseases, immunodeficiency (including AIDS), radiation exposure, or organ and bone marrow transplants can stimulate the overgrowth of Candida albicans.

Symptoms of candidiasis

The symptoms of candidiasis can vary depending on the part of the body where the infection occurs.

  • Oral Candidiasis (Thrush): When Candida overgrows in the mouth, it can lead to oral candidiasis. Symptoms include whitish patches on the tongue and inner cheeks, redness or soreness in the mouth and throat, difficulty swallowing, a cottony feeling in the mouth, and loss of taste.
  • Vaginal Candidiasis: When Candida overgrows in the vaginal area, it can result in vaginal candidiasis. Symptoms may include itching and burning, redness and swelling of the vaginal area, pain during sexual intercourse or urination, and thick, white, cottage cheese-like vaginal discharge.
  • Skin Candidiasis: Candidiasis can occur on the skin, particularly in warm, moist areas such as the armpits, groin, and under the breasts. Symptoms include redness, itching, irritation, and possible cracking of the skin.
  • Invasive Candidiasis: If Candida enters the bloodstream, it can cause invasive candidiasis, a serious and potentially life-threatening condition. Symptoms are non-specific but may include high fever, rapid heart rate, low blood pressure, nausea, or vomiting.

Treating the overgrowth of Candida albicans often involves antifungal medications, along with lifestyle and dietary changes, such as reducing sugar and alcohol intake, which can promote fungal growth.

When and why is this test performed?

Testing for Candida albicans is typically done when symptoms indicate a possible candidiasis infection. Additionally, the test may be conducted after antibacterial therapy with corticosteroids or to assess the effectiveness of antifungal treatment (antimycotic therapy).

Potential interferences

The use of antibacterial agents, contamination of the sample, or the presence of heparin in the sample can lead to false-negative results.

Preparation for the test

Preparing for the Candida albicans test involves several important steps:

  • The sample should be collected on an empty stomach or at least two hours after eating or drinking to ensure the accuracy of the test results.
  • Avoid rinsing or using any medications before the sample is taken.
  • If possible, testing should be done before starting any antiviral therapy.
  • It is recommended to avoid using topical medications 24 hours prior to sample collection.
  • The sample should be taken before performing any hygiene procedures.

These steps help ensure the most accurate test results. Your doctor or nurse will provide you with specific preparation instructions, which may vary based on your individual circumstances.
