The trichomonas vaginalis test is a microbiological analysis designed to detect the presence of the trichomonas vaginalis parasite in the urogenital tract. Samples for the test can include urethral, vaginal, or cervical swabs, as well as urine, ejaculate, or prostate secretion, depending on whether the test is for a man or a woman. If you suspect an infection or want to check your health status, you can schedule the analysis at IntroLab in Belgrade.

When is the trichomonas vaginalis test performed?

The trichomonas vaginalis test is recommended:

  • when symptoms of a urogenital tract infection are present
  • as part of routine gynecological examinations
  • when planning a pregnancy
  • if there is suspicion of a sexually transmitted infection
  • if a partner has been diagnosed with a trichomonas vaginalis infection

What are the symptoms of infection?

The infection can cause a range of unpleasant symptoms that manifest differently in men and women. These symptoms can vary in intensity but typically include the following:

  • Vaginal or urethral itching, redness, and irritation
  • Unusual, often frothy or greenish vaginal or urethral discharge
  • Pain or discomfort during urination or sexual intercourse

Timely recognition and treatment of symptoms can help prevent further complications and restore normal urogenital health.

How is the infection transmitted?

The infection is primarily transmitted through sexual contact. The parasite can be transmitted through direct genital contact with an infected person, regardless of whether the contact involves vaginal, anal, or oral sex.

Trichomonas vaginalis is not transmitted through contact with contaminated surfaces or objects, such as toilet seats, swimming pools, or bedding, as the parasite cannot survive long outside the human body. To reduce the risk of infection, it is recommended to use condoms during sexual intercourse and undergo regular testing for sexually transmitted infections, especially if a person has multiple sexual partners or a new sexual partner.

Treatment of the infection

Treatment of Trichomonas vaginalis infection is achieved with specific antibiotics. The doctor will determine the appropriate dosage and duration of therapy based on the specifics of the infection and the patient’s overall health. It is important for patients to complete the entire course of antibiotics, even if symptoms disappear early, to ensure complete eradication of the parasite. During the treatment period, avoiding sexual contact is advised to prevent further spread of the infection. It is also recommended that sexual partners be tested and treated to eliminate the risk of reinfection.
