PAPPA

The PAPPA test is part of prenatal screening in the first trimester of pregnancy, used to assess the likelihood of the most common genetic abnormalities, such as Down, Edwards, and Patau syndromes. The test results are mathematically processed to determine the probability of these abnormalities. Although PAPPA values do not provide diagnostic results, they can indicate potential risks and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Changes in PAPPA levels may be related to placental development. In combination with other parameters and techniques, PAPPA can be useful in identifying high-risk pregnancies. What do low and high values indicate?

Low PAPPA values in prenatal screening, along with elevated βHCG levels, may indicate an increased risk for trisomy 21 (Down syndrome) and other genetic disorders. This may be associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. A reduction in PAPPA values between the 11th and 13th weeks of gestation can be linked to various complications, such as stillbirth, intrauterine growth restriction, preterm birth, and preeclampsia. On the other hand, elevated PAPPA values are not of clinical significance.
