Urine analysis
At IntroLab we perform a detailed analysis of urine for the presence of melanin, providing accurate data that enables doctors to make informed decisions regarding the next steps in diagnosis and treatment.
What is melanin?
Melanin is a natural pigment that gives color to the skin, hair, and eyes. It is produced in specialized cells called melanocytes and plays a role in protecting the skin from harmful UV radiation. When the skin is exposed to sunlight, melanocytes produce more melanin, causing the skin to darken. Melanin not only determines the color of the skin and hair but also helps protect the DNA of cells from damage caused by UV radiation. However, when melanin is found in urine, it can be a sign of abnormalities in the metabolism of this pigment or more serious conditions, such as melanoma – an aggressive form of skin cancer.
Causes of melanin in urine
The main cause of melanin presence in urine is malignant melanomatosis, a condition resulting from the spread of malignant melanoma cells. These cells produce melanin in abnormally high amounts, which can lead to melanin entering the bloodstream and eventually being excreted in the urine. This occurrence is usually detected in the later stages of melanoma, making early diagnosis essential for further medical care.
How is the test conducted?
The urine analysis for melanin is a simple procedure that involves collecting a urine sample and conducting a laboratory examination. The presence of melanin in urine can be identified through specific tests, and the results of this analysis often require further diagnosis and medical monitoring to determine the cause and take appropriate steps in treatment.
