Sperm Culture (Bact/Mic) is a key analysis for male reproductive health, enabling the identification of pathogens in semen. Whether it’s due to infectious symptoms or fertility issues, IntroLab laboratory in Belgrade provides a comprehensive analysis with expert support.
What is Sperm Culture (Bact/Mic)?
A sperm culture is a laboratory test used to detect and identify bacteria or other pathogens in male semen. The semen sample is collected from the ejaculate and placed on specific nutrient media to encourage the growth of any potential pathogens. After incubation, it is possible to determine the type and quantity of bacteria or other microorganisms present.
When is the test done?
A sperm culture (Bact/Mic) is usually recommended when a man has symptoms suggesting a possible infection of the reproductive tract, such as:
- Pain
- Burning sensation
- Discharge from the penis
It is also done when there is a suspicion of infertility due to a potential infection.
Sample collection
The semen sample is usually collected through masturbation. The individual is instructed to collect the semen in a sterile container provided by the laboratory. It is crucial to ensure that the container remains sterile to avoid contamination of the sample.
Preparation for Sperm Culture (Bact/Mic)
Avoid using lubricants or other chemicals that could contaminate the sample. If the patient is currently on antibiotic therapy, it is advised to delay the sperm culture sample collection.
Sperm Culture results
If pathogens are found in the sample, the results will indicate the specific type and amount of bacteria or other microorganisms. A negative result indicates the absence of pathogens. However, it’s important to note that a negative result does not rule out all infections. In some cases, it might be necessary to repeat the test or use additional diagnostic methods to confirm the diagnosis.
