The nasal mucosa is not just a barrier but also hosts a diverse microbiological flora that performs crucial functions in maintaining our health. When the upper respiratory tract is exposed to infectious agents, we often first encounter typical symptoms of a viral infection. However, it’s important to take immediate action when symptoms deepen and become characteristic of a bacterial infection of the nose and sinuses. To receive an accurate diagnosis in a timely manner, you can schedule a nasal/sinus content analysis at the specialized IntroLab laboratory in Belgrade, where experts use state-of-the-art methods for rapid and precise identification of pathogens.
What is a nasal swab?
A nasal swab is a diagnostic procedure that involves taking a sample of mucus or secretions from the nasal cavity to identify potential pathogens. The goal is to detect the presence of bacteria that may cause infection. Bacterial inflammation of the nasal mucosa and sinuses can lead to symptoms such as:
- Nasal discharge
- Congestion
- Facial pain
- Headaches
Analyzing the swab can precisely determine the pathogen causing the infection and appropriately prescribe treatment.
When is nasal/sinus content analyzed?
Nasal/sinus content is most often analyzed when there is suspicion of a bacterial infection in the nose or sinuses, especially if there is a burning sensation in the nose, the presence of sores on the mucosa, or if the patient has thick, discolored nasal secretions that may indicate sinus inflammation, inner ear issues, or bronchitis.
Analysis is also important if symptoms become severe, prolonged, or do not respond to basic treatment. In certain situations, such as identifying specific pathogens in cases of hospital-acquired infections or in individuals with weakened immune systems, this analysis is essential.
Sample collection
The sample is taken using sterile swabs carefully inserted into the nasal cavity or sinus. The technique must be precise to avoid damaging tissue and to ensure a quality sample. After collection, the swab is placed in a sterile container and sent to the laboratory.
Preparation for analysis
No special preparation is required before taking the swab. However, informing the doctor about any medications or antibiotics currently being taken is important. The doctor will provide instructions if it’s necessary to stop any therapy before sample collection.
Result of nasal/sinus content analysis
The results may indicate the sample’s presence, type, and quantity of bacteria. Information about the sensitivity of bacteria to various antibiotics may also be provided. Based on this information, the doctor will recommend the most effective treatment for the patient.
