A vulvar swab is a medical test used to detect bacteria and fungi that can cause infections in the genital area. Genital swabs, which include this analysis, help doctors identify the causes of various symptoms, such as itching, redness, or unusual discharge. This test is part of a wide range of services provided by IntroLab, a private laboratory in Belgrade.
Why is it important to do a vulvar swab?
Genital infections can be caused by different microorganisms. With timely diagnosis, it’s possible to begin appropriate treatment and prevent complications. This swab allows for precise identification of the presence of bacteria and fungi, making it easier to select the right treatment.
What are the indications for taking a vulvar swab?
Although a vulvar swab is often taken when symptoms are present, there are other situations where it is recommended to perform this test:
- As part of an annual check-up, a doctor may suggest a swab to ensure there are no hidden infections.
- Before planning a pregnancy, to ensure optimal health before conception.
- After changing sexual partners, as a preventive measure, especially if protection was not used.
- If you’ve had contact with someone who has a genital infection.
How is the sample taken for the analysis?
Taking a sample is a quick and simple procedure. A medical technician uses a sterile swab to collect a sample from the vulvar area. This procedure is painless and only takes a few minutes.
How to prepare for taking a swab?
To ensure the most accurate results, it’s important to follow certain guidelines before taking the sample:
- Avoid sexual intercourse 24 hours before taking the swab.
- Do not use vaginal creams, sprays, or tampons the day before the test.
- If possible, do the swab when you do not have menstrual bleeding.
Results and their significance
The results of a vulvar swab can be:
- Negative: No presence of pathogenic microorganisms. This is the ideal result, indicating no infection.
- Positive: The presence of pathogenic microorganisms is detected. Depending on the type of microorganism, the doctor will recommend the appropriate treatment.
Possible complications if the infection is not treated
Untreated genital infections can lead to various complications, including:
- Inflammation of the fallopian tubes and ovaries.
- Chronic lower abdominal pain.
- Issues with conception.
- Increased risk of ectopic pregnancy.
