A vaginal swab is a straightforward but crucial test that helps identify pathogens present in your vagina. This test is often recommended for women experiencing uncomfortable symptoms related to the genital area. It is available at IntroLab laboratory in Belgrade.

Why is a vaginal swab important?

A vaginal swab enables the detection of various infections such as candidiasis, bacterial vaginosis, and trichomoniasis. These infections can cause a range of symptoms, including:

  • Unusual vaginal discharge
  • Itching
  • Burning sensation
  • Pain

If left untreated, these infections can lead to more serious complications.

How is a vaginal swab taken?

A sterile swab is gently inserted into the vagina to collect the sample. The sample is then placed on a special medium and sent to the laboratory for analysis. In the lab, the sample is examined under a microscope to identify pathogens. Additionally, culturing techniques may be used to determine the sensitivity of the identified bacteria to antibiotics.

When should a vaginal swab be done?

It is recommended for women to have a vaginal swab if they show symptoms of infection or as part of a routine gynecological examination. A vaginal swab may also be included in screening for sexually transmitted infections, especially in younger women or those with a new sexual partner.

How to properly prepare for a vaginal swab test?

Proper preparation for a vaginal swab can significantly impact the accuracy of the results. Here are some tips to help you prepare:

  • Avoid using intimate soaps, gels, or douches the day before the test to preserve the natural vaginal flora.
  • The ideal time for testing is the middle of your menstrual cycle when there is no bleeding.
  • If you need to do the swab during your period, use sanitary pads instead of tampons the day before the test.
  • It is advisable to abstain from sexual intercourse for at least 24 hours before the test.
  • If you have recently used antibiotics or any vaginal creams, inform the laboratory staff.

Why is this preparation important?

Vaginal swab testing requires specific preparation to ensure that the sample is not contaminated, leading to the most accurate results. Proper preparation helps laboratory technicians obtain a clean sample, making it easier to identify and quantify the microorganisms present.
