One of the key tests that can provide insight into your oral health is the oral swab, focusing on bacteriological and mycological examination. This test can be performed at the private laboratory in Belgrade, IntroLab.
What is an oral swab?
An oral swab is a diagnostic method that involves taking a sample from the patient’s oral cavity. The goal is to identify the bacteria and fungi present, which may indicate various oral infections or conditions.
Why is this test important?
Oral health often reflects overall health. The bacteria and fungi in the mouth can cause a range of conditions, from gingivitis to more serious infections. Additionally, some systemic diseases, such as diabetes, may present with changes in the oral flora.
Who should consider this test?
While everyone is encouraged to occasionally check their oral flora, this test is particularly recommended for individuals who experience symptoms like:
- Redness in the mouth
- Swelling
- Bad breath
It is also advised for those undergoing antibiotic treatment or with weakened immune systems to periodically perform an oral swab. This helps determine whether the treatment is effective or if a pathogen has developed due to a weakened immune response.
Preparation for the test
The preparation is simple, but a few steps can help ensure the most accurate results:
- Avoid mouth rinses with antiseptics: On the day of the test, avoid using antiseptic mouth rinses to prevent temporarily eliminating pathogens.
- No food or drink before the test: Refrain from eating or drinking to avoid contaminating the sample.
- Avoid brushing teeth before the test: Although regular oral hygiene is essential, it’s advised not to brush your teeth before the test for the same reason.
- Inform the staff about current medications: Let the medical staff know if you’re taking any medication, especially antibiotics, before the swab is taken.
Why is preparation important?
Proper preparation ensures that the sample accurately represents your oral flora, allowing the lab to identify and quantify the bacteria and fungi, which is crucial for establishing the correct diagnosis.
How is the oral swab collected?
The sample is collected quickly and painlessly. A sterile swab is gently rubbed against the inside of the cheeks, tongue, and gums. The sample is then sent for analysis.
