What is a wound swab (Bact/Myc)?

A wound swab (Bact/Myc) is a medical procedure where a sample is collected from the surface or depth of a wound to analyze potential pathogens, such as microorganisms, that may be causing an infection. This procedure allows medical staff to identify which microorganisms are present in the wound and take appropriate treatment steps, especially when it is necessary to determine the correct antibiotic.

When is the analysis performed?

A wound swab (Bact/Myc) is typically performed when there is suspicion of a wound infection or when the wound is not healing despite proper treatment. Suppose there is suspicion that bacteria, fungi, or other pathogens contaminate the wound. In that case, it is essential to determine the type and sensitivity of these pathogens to various therapeutic agents. The swab may also be taken preventively in the postoperative period or for patients with chronic wounds to monitor wound colonization and potential infection risk.

Taking a wound swab

Taking a wound swab is a relatively simple procedure. Medical personnel use a sterile cotton swab to collect the sample from the wound. It is important that the sample is taken from living tissue, not from necrotic parts of the wound. Once collected, the swab is placed in a sterile transport tube and sent to a microbiology lab for analysis.

Preparation for a wound swab

A wound swab can be taken at any time of day. If the patient is on antibiotic therapy, swabbing is not recommended. The swab should be taken at least 12 hours after using antiseptics, ideally before dressing the wound.
