The Acne Swab (Bact/Mic) analysis is an important test for detecting bacterial skin infections, particularly in cases of acne. At our IntroLab laboratory, we provide reliable results that assist in diagnosing and treating acne. If you would like to undergo this analysis, contact us or visit our laboratory in Belgrade.

What is the Acne Swab (Bact/Mic) and why is it important?

The Acne Swab (Bact/Mic) is a lab test used to detect the presence of bacterial skin infections, especially in acne cases. Acne is often caused by inflammatory processes triggered by bacteria that multiply on the skin. This analysis helps identify specific bacterial species such as Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis, which are commonly found in acne. Identifying these bacteria allows for personalized treatment and the selection of appropriate medications or therapies to reduce inflammation and improve skin condition.

When is the Acne Swab recommended?

Skin swab analysis can be performed in various situations depending on clinical needs. Here are a few examples of when this analysis may be recommended:

  • When a bacterial or fungal skin infection is suspected
  • For skin lesions or rashes that do not respond to usual treatments
  • In individuals at risk of skin infections
  • To monitor the effectiveness of therapy

It’s important to consult with a healthcare professional or dermatologist to determine if a skin swab analysis is necessary in your specific case.

How to prepare for the analysis?

A skin swab sample for microbiological examination can be taken at any time of the day. If the patient is currently on antibiotic therapy, a sample should not be taken, as the presence of antibiotics can negatively affect the growth of the pathogenic microorganisms being identified in the skin swab.

Avoid using antiseptic products, such as solutions or ointments, for at least 12 hours before the swab. This prevents any influence antiseptics might have on the test results.

How is the sample taken?

Taking a skin swab is a simple and painless procedure. Our skilled team uses sterile swabs or cotton gauze to carefully pass over the affected or targeted area of the skin. The procedure is performed using aseptic techniques to ensure a clean and reliable sample.

After identifying pathogenic microorganisms in the skin swab culture result, additional testing is often performed to assess the sensitivity of these microorganisms to different antibiotics. This is known as antibiotic sensitivity testing or an antibiogram.

Sensitivity testing aims to determine which antibiotics are most likely to effectively inhibit or destroy the microorganisms. A specific method is used, exposing the microorganisms to various antibiotics under controlled conditions.

When can results be expected?

The time required to complete the Acne Swab (Bact/Mic) analysis may vary depending on laboratory protocols. Typically, results become available within 2 to 4 days.
