What is Streptomycin?

Streptomycin is an antibiotic from the aminoglycoside group, used to treat various bacterial infections, including tuberculosis and certain types of kidney infections. It works by inhibiting the production of proteins necessary for bacterial growth and reproduction, thereby stopping the bacteria from multiplying.

When is the Streptomycin C206 test conducted?

The Streptomycin C206 test is recommended when a patient shows signs of a bacterial infection that can be treated with streptomycin or when a patient is already receiving streptomycin therapy and drug levels need to be monitored. The test is also useful if there is suspicion of toxic or allergic reactions to streptomycin.

Allergic reactions to streptomycin may include:

• Anaphylactic shock (in severe cases, with symptoms such as difficulty breathing and a sudden drop in blood pressure).
• Swelling of the face, tongue, mouth, or throat.
