The Transglutaminase IgG Ab analysis is a type of immunological blood test used to detect antibodies against tissue transglutaminase (tTG). IntroLab laboratory in Belgrade is available for this analysis, which is crucial for diagnosing celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder that affects the small intestine.
What is celiac disease?
Celiac disease, also known as gluten-sensitive enteropathy, is an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system mistakenly identifies gluten—a protein found in wheat, barley, rye, and oats—as a foreign invader. In response, the body produces antibodies that attack an enzyme in the intestines known as tissue transglutaminase (tTG). This disease affects approximately 1% of the global population.
The presence of tissue transglutaminase IgA antibodies is specific for celiac disease. In individuals with moderate to strongly positive results, a diagnosis of celiac disease is likely, and the patient should undergo a biopsy to confirm the diagnosis. The presence of transglutaminase IgG antibodies may indicate a diagnosis of celiac disease, especially in individuals with an IgA deficiency.
What are the symptoms of celiac disease?
The symptoms of celiac disease can vary from person to person, ranging from mild to severe. However, here are some of the most common symptoms:
- Digestive problems: This includes diarrhea, constipation, bloating, gas, and abdominal pain.
- Weight loss
- Fatigue and weakness
- Iron-deficiency anemia
- Osteoporosis
- Skin rash (dermatitis herpetiformis)
- Headaches and migraines
- Joint and muscle pain
- Neurological problems: These include balance issues, numbness in the legs (neuropathy), and concentration disorders.
- Dental and oral problems: This can include mouth ulcers, enamel damage, and gum inflammation.
- Growth and developmental issues in children
- Infertility and irregular menstrual cycles
- Depression and anxiety
Treatment of the disease
The primary treatment for celiac disease is maintaining a gluten-free diet. Most patients who adhere to this diet show a reduction in associated autoantibodies and recovery of the intestines. An improvement in clinical symptoms usually accompanies this.
Reference ranges for Transglutaminase IgG Ab analysis
tTG ANTIBODIES, IgG: <6.0 U/mL (negative)
tTG ANTIBODIES, IgG: 6.0-9.0 U/mL (mildly positive)
tTG ANTIBODIES, IgG: >9.0 U/mL (positive)
Related analyses
In addition to the Transglutaminase IgG Ab analysis, IntroLab also offers the Transglutaminase IgA Ab analysis, as well as additional tests that can confirm or rule out a diagnosis of celiac disease.
