Mosquitoes are insects known for causing itching and redness after they bite. However, for some individuals, a mosquito bite can trigger a more severe allergic reaction. The mosquito I71 test is used to diagnose this type of allergy and is available at IntroLab, a private laboratory in Belgrade.

What is a mosquito?

A mosquito is a small flying insect that feeds on the blood of mammals, including humans. There are over 3,000 species of mosquitoes, with the most well-known being Aedes aegypti, which transmits yellow fever. Female mosquitoes feed by piercing the skin, injecting saliva, and extracting blood. The saliva can cause skin reactions and, in some cases, systemic responses.

What is a mosquito allergy?

A mosquito allergy occurs when the immune system reacts to proteins in the mosquito’s saliva. Most people experience mild reactions, such as itching and redness after a bite. However, individuals with a mosquito allergy may have more severe symptoms.

What causes an allergic reaction to a mosquito bite?

When a mosquito bites, it injects saliva into the skin to prevent blood clotting, making it easier to feed. The saliva contains proteins that, in some cases, the immune system identifies as harmful. The body responds by releasing histamine, which causes reactions like itching and redness.

Symptoms of a mosquito allergy

In addition to the two most common symptoms, the following can also occur:

  • Swelling at the bite site
  • Blisters
  • Anaphylactic shock, a severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction

Mosquito I71 test

The mosquito I71 test is used to diagnose allergies to mosquito bites. This test is typically done by drawing blood and analyzing it for specific antibodies that react to proteins in mosquito saliva. If a person is allergic to mosquitoes, their immune system will produce antibodies in response to the bite, which can be detected by this test.

How are allergy symptoms treated?

While there is no cure for a mosquito bite allergy, symptoms can be managed. Antihistamines can provide immediate relief, and in more severe cases, immunotherapy may be considered.

Natural remedies for symptom relief

Here are a few recommendations for relieving symptoms naturally:

  • Aloe vera: Known for its soothing properties, aloe vera gel can be applied directly to the bite for immediate relief.
  • Baking soda: Create a paste using baking soda and water and apply it to the bite to help reduce itching and swelling.
  • Lavender: Lavender essential oil can reduce inflammation and itching, but it should always be diluted with water before applying to the skin.

How to recognize an allergic reaction vs. a regular mosquito bite

Most people experience mild reactions after a mosquito bite, but how can you tell if your reaction is allergic? If you notice the following symptoms, it’s recommended to seek medical attention:

  • The bite swells and becomes larger than normal
  • Intense pain at the bite site
  • Bluish or pale skin around the bite
  • Difficulty breathing or tightness in the throat

Long-term effects of allergic reactions

While most reactions subside quickly, in rare cases, Skeeter syndrome may develop. This condition can cause large, painful blisters that last longer than a typical mosquito bite.

Preventing mosquito bites

The best way to avoid an allergic reaction is to prevent mosquito bites. Here are a few tips:

  • Wear clothing that covers most of your body when outdoors.
  • Use insect repellent.
  • Avoid being outside during sunset and sunrise, when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Install mosquito screens on windows and doors.

How to prepare for a doctor’s visit

If you decide to see a doctor for your reaction to a mosquito bite, it’s important to be prepared. Make a note of all the symptoms you’ve experienced and how long they lasted. Bring information about any medications or supplements you’re taking, as well as the results of the mosquito I71 test, if you’ve done it. This will help your doctor make an accurate diagnosis and recommend the right treatment.
