At the IntroLab in Belgrade, patients can undergo the Listeria monocytogenes IgM Ab analysis, which is part of bacteriological serology. This blood test enables the detection of IgM antibodies that are specific to the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes, the cause of a disease known as listeriosis.
What is Listeria monocytogenes?
Listeria monocytogenes is a gram-positive bacterium that can be found in soil, water, and some animals, such as livestock and birds. It can also be present in raw milk and products made from raw milk, as well as in raw meat and vegetables. One of the main characteristics of this bacterium is its ability to grow at low temperatures, meaning it can multiply even in the refrigerator.
Listeriosis is an infectious disease that can manifest in various ways, depending on the person and the part of the body affected. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and may include:
- Fever,
- Muscle pains,
- Vomiting and/or
- Diarrhea.
If the infection spreads through the bloodstream, it can cause more severe symptoms such as:
- Headache,
- Stiff neck,
- Confusion,
- Loss of balance, and
- Convulsions.
It is especially dangerous for pregnant women, as it can lead to premature birth, infection of the newborn, or even the death of the newborn.
Individuals with weakened immune systems, the elderly, pregnant women, and newborns are particularly susceptible to infection with this bacterium. For this reason, it is important to take all necessary precautions when preparing and consuming food. Prevention of listeriosis includes proper handling of raw food, thorough hand washing, as well as proper storage and preparation of food. It is particularly important to avoid consuming raw milk and products made from raw milk, as well as unpasteurized soft cheeses.
If you suspect that you have consumed food that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes or are showing symptoms of listeriosis, it is advised to immediately consult a doctor.
Why is the test performed?
The Listeria monocytogenes IgM Ab analysis is usually recommended for individuals who show symptoms of listeriosis or have been exposed to potentially contaminated food. IgM antibodies are early markers of infection and usually appear several days after exposure to the bacterium.
How is the sample taken for analysis?
A venous blood sample is required for the analysis. Blood drawing is a quick and simple procedure performed in the laboratory.
Interpretation of results
A positive result for Listeria monocytogenes IgM Ab indicates that the person has recently been exposed to the bacterium and may have listeriosis. However, a positive result can also occur in individuals who have previously been exposed to the bacterium but are not currently ill. A negative result usually indicates that the person has not been exposed to the bacterium.
Tests similar to Listeria monocytogenes IgM Ab
In addition to the Listeria monocytogenes IgM Ab analysis, other tests in the group of bacteriological serology are useful in diagnosing infections with this bacterium. One such test is the Listeria monocytogenes IgG Ab, which is also available at IntroLab.
