What is Helicobacter pylori?

Helicobacter pylori is a bacterium that inhabits the human gastrointestinal tract, particularly the stomach and duodenum. This bacterium is one of the main causes of gastrointestinal issues such as:

  • Stomach ulcers
  • Gastritis
  • Reduction of the gastric mucosa

H. pylori infection often goes unnoticed, but it can cause symptoms such as stomach pain, heartburn, and digestive problems in some people. It is also associated with an increased risk of developing certain gastrointestinal diseases, including stomach cancer.

How is the infection treated?

Helicobacter pylori infection can be treated with antibiotics and other medications to eliminate the bacteria and prevent the recurrence of symptoms. After treatment, follow-up testing may be necessary to confirm that the infection has been successfully eradicated.

Treatment of H. pylori infection requires medical supervision, as antibiotic resistance sometimes occurs, and the treatment may need to be tailored to the individual needs of the patient. Additionally, the doctor will monitor the patient’s symptoms and assess progress during and after treatment.

When is the Helicobacter pylori IgG Ab test performed?

The anti-Helicobacter pylori IgG antibody test is performed to determine whether a person has been exposed to the Helicobacter pylori bacterium. This test can detect antibodies even after the infection has passed, so the results must be interpreted in the context of the patient’s clinical picture. Sometimes, additional tests, such as the urea breath test, Helicobacter pylori Ag stool test, or endoscopy with biopsy, may be needed to confirm an active infection.

Interpretation of results

The test result can be:

  • Negative: This usually indicates the absence of IgG antibodies against H. pylori in the blood. It may suggest that the person has not been exposed to the bacterium or that a significant amount of time has passed since exposure.
  • Positive: This indicates exposure to the Helicobacter pylori bacterium in the past, without the ability to differentiate between current or past infection.

The Helicobacter pylori IgG Ab test results should be interpreted by a qualified healthcare professional, typically a gastroenterologist or infectious disease specialist, taking into account the clinical context, patient symptoms, and other diagnostic information.
