The HHV 6 IgG test is used to determine the presence of antibodies specific to Human Herpesvirus 6, which indicates prior exposure to the virus. If you want to be tested and understand more about your immune response to HHV-6, you can schedule the test at IntroLab in Belgrade. With advanced techniques and a skilled team, you can trust the accuracy and speed of the results.
What is HHV 6 IgG?
HHV 6 IgG refers to immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies that are directed against the HHV-6 virus. The presence of HHV-6 IgG antibodies in a person’s blood indicates that they have been exposed to the virus at some point and have developed immunity to it. In most cases, HHV-6 infection occurs during childhood, which is why the majority of adults have detectable IgG antibodies against HHV-6 in their blood. Testing for HHV 6 IgG can help confirm past exposure to the virus. However, to diagnose an acute infection, healthcare providers usually look for the presence of HHV 6 IgM antibodies or use other diagnostic methods, such as PCR testing.
What is HHV-6?
HHV-6, or Human Herpesvirus 6, is a virus that belongs to the herpesvirus family. There are two main types of this virus:
- HHV-6B is known for causing a disease called roseola (exanthema subitum) or sixth disease. This illness is common in childhood and is typically mild. It is characterized by a high fever followed by a rash after the fever subsides. While most children recover without complications, the disease can be more severe in individuals with weakened immune systems.
- HHV-6A is less understood, and its role in human diseases is less clear compared to HHV-6B.
Aside from causing acute infections in children, HHV-6, like other herpesviruses, can remain dormant in the body and reactivate later in life. Reactivation can be a concern, especially for people with weakened immune systems, such as transplant recipients or those undergoing chemotherapy.
Although HHV-6 belongs to the herpesvirus family, it is different from the viruses that cause the more commonly known forms of herpes, such as herpes simplex virus (HSV) types 1 and 2, which cause oral and genital herpes infections, or the varicella-zoster virus, which causes chickenpox and shingles.
What are the symptoms of the virus?
The symptoms include:
- High fever that can last for several days
- Sudden light pink rash, especially on the trunk, neck, and face
- Irritability
- Swelling of the eyelids
- Sore throat
- Diarrhea
- Encephalitis (inflammation of the brain)
- Meningitis (inflammation of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord)
How is it transmitted?
HHV-6 is transmitted through saliva, which is why it often spreads among young children who have close contact with each other. Parents and caregivers can pass the virus to a child through shared cups, utensils, or toys. It can also be transmitted from mother to fetus during pregnancy.
How is the virus treated?
Treatment for HHV-6 infection is usually symptomatic, focusing on alleviating symptoms until the infection resolves on its own. Antipyretics can be used to reduce fever. In more severe cases or in individuals with weakened immune systems, antiviral medications like ganciclovir may be used.
Virus prevention
To prevent infection:
- Avoid close contact with individuals who have an active infection
- Wash your hands regularly
- Clean surfaces and toys frequently
- Do not share cups and eating utensils
Preparation for the test
No special preparation is needed before having blood drawn for the HHV 6 IgG test. However, it is recommended to inform your doctor about any medications or supplements you are taking to ensure they do not affect the test results. Avoid consuming alcohol the day before the test and try to relax before the blood draw to make the process as comfortable as possible. Wear clothing that provides easy access to your forearm.
