Hepatitis A is a contagious disease that affects the liver and causes various symptoms ranging from mild to severe. Early diagnosis and management of this disease are crucial for preventing complications and spreading infection. IntroLab Laboratory in Belgrade offers reliable and prompt testing for the Hepatitis A virus, including the HAV IgM Antibodies. This test is important for identifying current or recent infections and enables swift and effective treatment.

What is HAV IgM?

HAV IgM are immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies produced in response to an infection with the Hepatitis A virus. These antibodies in the blood indicate that a person is currently or has recently been infected with HAV.

What is Hepatitis A?

Hepatitis A is a liver infection caused by the Hepatitis A virus (HAV). This disease is one of the various forms of hepatitis that affect the liver and presents with a range of symptoms, including:

  • Jaundice
  • Fatigue
  • Abdominal pain
  • Elevated body temperature

Hepatitis A is typically transmitted through contaminated food and water or direct contact with an infected person. Additionally, the virus can be spread through poor hygiene, such as not washing hands after using the toilet. Given its potentially serious health impact, diagnosing and treating Hepatitis A is essential.

When is the HAV IgM Antibodies test performed?

Testing for HAV IgM Antibodies is generally conducted when symptoms indicative of Hepatitis A are present or when there is an increased risk of exposure to the virus. This includes individuals who have been in contact with someone with Hepatitis A, those who have recently traveled to high-risk regions, or individuals exposed to contaminated food or water.

Subtypes of the test and specifics

In diagnosing Hepatitis A, serological testing is often used, which may include:

  • HAV IgM antibody test: Detects IgM antibodies specific to HAV.
  • HAV IgG antibody test: Detects IgG antibodies, which may indicate past infection or vaccination.

Low and elevated values

If the IgM antibody levels for Hepatitis A virus (HAV) are low or negative, it generally means there is no current or recent infection. The person may not have been exposed to the virus, or sufficient time may have passed for the antibodies to be detectable. However, the absence of IgM antibodies does not completely rule out infection, especially if symptoms are present, as there may be a “window” during which tests cannot detect antibodies.

Elevated IgM antibody levels typically indicate that a person is currently or recently infected with Hepatitis A. IgM antibodies usually appear early in the infection and may be present even before symptoms manifest. A positive result requires further medical evaluation and potential treatment or monitoring, depending on the severity of symptoms and the patient’s overall health.

Interpretation and next steps

After receiving results, it is important to consult with a healthcare provider who will interpret the findings in the context of your symptoms, medical history, and other diagnostic tests. In some cases, additional tests may be needed to confirm the diagnosis and determine the severity of the illness.

Handling positive or negative results may involve additional tests and procedures, including potential vaccination against Hepatitis A for those at risk but not yet infected.
