The Galactomannan test is an essential diagnostic tool for identifying invasive aspergillosis, a severe fungal infection that can be life-threatening, particularly in individuals with compromised immune systems. At IntroLab in Belgrade, this test is employed to promptly detect the presence of Aspergillus fungi in the body, allowing for swift intervention and minimizing the risk of complications.
What is Galactomannan?
Galactomannan is a polysaccharide, or complex sugar, produced by certain fungi, including Aspergillus, one of the most common causes of fungal infections in humans. This substance is released into the surrounding environment as these fungi grow and reproduce.
When galactomannan is detected in the human body, it can serve as a marker for invasive aspergillosis, a severe infection that commonly affects individuals with weakened immune systems. Patients undergoing chemotherapy or those who have received organ transplants are particularly at risk.
Why is Galactomannan measurement important?
Measuring galactomannan levels in the serum is vital for the early detection of invasive aspergillosis. This infection can be life-threatening if not treated in a timely manner, particularly in individuals with compromised immune systems. Early detection enables prompt treatment, which can significantly reduce the risk of complications and improve patient outcomes.
Symptoms that may indicate aspergillosis
Symptoms that could suggest invasive aspergillosis include:
- Persistent high fever that doesn’t respond to antibiotics
- Chest pain
- Coughing with blood-tinged sputum
- Shortness of breath
Testing is also recommended for patients with known risk factors for invasive aspergillosis, such as those who have undergone organ transplants, chemotherapy, or long-term corticosteroid therapy.
How are the results interpreted?
A positive galactomannan test result may suggest the presence of invasive aspergillosis. However, this result alone does not confirm the diagnosis; it must be considered alongside other diagnostic methods, such as clinical evaluation, imaging studies, and mycological tests.
A negative result may indicate the absence of the disease, but it does not entirely exclude the possibility of invasive aspergillosis, particularly in high-risk patients.
How is the Galactomannan test conducted?
The Galactomannan test is conducted using a blood sample drawn from a vein in the patient’s arm. The sample is then analyzed using an ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) to detect the level of galactomannan in the serum. ELISA is a highly sensitive and specific technique that provides quantitative results, enabling precise monitoring of galactomannan levels over time.
