The Phospholipid IgG At test is an essential blood test that detects antibodies directed against phospholipids. These antibodies, referred to as antiphospholipid antibodies, are commonly linked to antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), a condition that can cause abnormal blood clotting. IntroLab, a top laboratory in Belgrade, provides this test to ensure accurate diagnosis and effective monitoring of this immune disorder.
What are Phospholipid IgG antibodies?
Phospholipids are important components of cell membranes, and antibodies that target these molecules can interfere with normal cell function, leading to various clinical symptoms. Antiphosphatidylserine antibodies (aPS) are specifically detected using the ELISA test and are commonly recommended for the serological diagnosis of antiphospholipid syndrome. Patients who test positive for both cardiolipin and phosphatidylserine antibodies are at a higher risk of experiencing clinical complications than those positive for only one of these antibodies.
Purpose of the test
The Phospholipid IgG At test is used to detect antiphospholipid antibodies in the blood. These antibodies are linked to an increased risk of recurrent arterial and venous thrombotic events, thrombocytopenia, and fetal loss, which are key features of antiphospholipid syndrome. Elevated serum levels of antiphospholipid antibodies are commonly found in patients with autoimmune diseases, such as lupus, but can also be present in individuals with non-autoimmune conditions and even in healthy people.
Blood draw procedure
A blood sample is required for this test, taken from a vein in your arm. The process is quick and straightforward. After the area is disinfected, a nurse or technician will use a sterile needle to draw the blood. Once the necessary amount is collected, the needle is removed, and the puncture site is covered with sterile gauze.
Result interpretation
The results of the test can be classified as negative, borderline, or positive. The reference values are:
- <10 U/mL is megative
- 10-20 U/mL is borderline
- 20 U/mL is positive
A positive result may suggest an increased risk of thrombosis and pregnancy loss. However, these results should not be used in isolation for diagnosis and need to be interpreted alongside clinical symptoms or other antiphospholipid antibody tests.
Additional tests
Along with the Phospholipid IgG At test, patients at IntroLab can also access the Phospholipid IgM At Test.
