In bacteriological serology, the Coxiella burnetii IgG At test is a vital diagnostic tool for detecting antibodies against the bacterium Coxiella burnetii, the causative agent of Q fever. Available at IntroLab, a private lab in Belgrade, this blood test helps doctors diagnose and monitor infections with this bacterium, which can cause a range of symptoms, including fever, atypical pneumonia, and endocarditis.

What is Coxiella burnetii?

Coxiella burnetii is a small, obligate intracellular bacterium primarily associated with animals, especially sheep and goats. The bacterium is transmitted through the inhalation of airborne droplets and typically causes a mild respiratory illness. In some cases, an acute infection can progress to a chronic condition, often presenting as endocarditis. If left untreated, Q fever endocarditis can be life-threatening.

Testing methodology

The test is typically conducted using the Indirect Fluorescent Antibody (IFA) method. This semi-quantitative technique is employed to detect and measure IgG antibodies against Coxiella burnetii in a blood sample. Testing is recommended for symptomatic patients to confirm C. burnetii as the infectious agent.

Sample collection

This blood test requires a serum sample from the patient’s venous blood. It is advisable to separate the serum from the cells as quickly as possible, preferably within two hours of collection. The sample should be stored in a cool environment until it is analyzed.

Interpreting the results for Coxiella burnetii IgG At

The test results can be positive, negative, or borderline:

  • Positive Result: Indicates the presence of IgG antibodies against C. burnetii in your blood, suggesting previous exposure to this bacterium.
  • Negative Result: Shows no detectable IgG antibodies, implying that you likely have not been exposed to this bacterium, or your immune response was insufficient.
  • Borderline Result: This may indicate that the amount of antibodies in your sample is close to the detection limit of the test. In this case, it may be necessary to repeat the test or perform additional analyses alongside the Coxiella burnetii IgG test.
