Blood tests are often the first step when addressing symptoms or checking overall health. One important test is for Cytomegalovirus IgG At (CMV). This test is especially crucial for those planning a pregnancy and individuals with weakened immune systems.

What is Cytomegalovirus?

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a virus from the herpesvirus family that is commonly found in humans. Approximately 50% of people are infected with this virus, often without realizing it. Most CMV infections are symptomless, but the virus can pose risks to pregnant women and individuals with compromised immune systems.

Why is testing for Cytomegalovirus IgG At (CMV) important?

The Cytomegalovirus IgG At test (CMV) is used to detect and measure antibodies to CMV, helping to determine whether a person has a past or current infection. While the presence of CMV-specific IgG antibodies doesn’t guarantee immunity, a positive result can indicate either a current or previous infection with the virus.

How is Cytomegalovirus spread?

CMV can be spread from person to person through bodily fluids like blood, saliva, urine, semen, and breast milk. Pregnant women can transmit the virus to their unborn child. It can also be passed on through blood transfusions, organ transplants, or sexual contact.

Possible complications and risks

Cytomegalovirus may seem like a mild infection, but it can lead to severe complications in certain groups:

  • Newborns and Infants: If a mother contracts the virus for the first time during pregnancy, there is a risk of transmitting it to the fetus. This can result in congenital infection, which may cause hearing loss, vision problems, intellectual disabilities, and other neurological issues in the baby.
  • People with Weakened Immune Systems: Those who have had organ transplants, are undergoing chemotherapy, or are living with HIV/AIDS are particularly susceptible to Cytomegalovirus. In these individuals, CMV can cause significant damage to the eyes, lungs, liver, stomach, intestines, and brain.
  • Older Adults: As the immune system weakens with age, the risk of viral reactivation and related complications increases.

How to protect yourself from CMV

While there is no vaccine for Cytomegalovirus at this time, you can take several precautions to lower your risk of infection:

  • Practice Good Hand Hygiene: Regularly and thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water, especially after changing diapers, wiping a child’s nose, or handling saliva.
  • Avoid Sharing Food and Drinks: Since CMV can be spread through infected saliva, it’s advisable not to share cups, plates, or utensils.
  • Use Protection During Sexual Activity: Condoms can help reduce the risk of transmitting the virus.

How to Prepare for a Cytomegalovirus IgG At test

The Cytomegalovirus IgG At (CMV) test requires a blood sample. At IntroLab in Vračar, where the test is performed, no special preparation is needed before the blood draw. Test results are usually available within a day.

What values indicate the presence of CMV IgG At?

  • 0.8 AI or lower: Negative – No significant levels of CMV IgG antibodies detected.
  • 0.9-1.0 AI: Uncertain – Retesting in 10-14 days may be recommended.
  • 1.1 AI or higher: Positive – CMV IgG antibodies detected, which could suggest a current or past infection.
