IntroLab laboratory in Vračar offers urine protein electrophoresis analysis to help diagnose and monitor conditions related to altered protein levels in the blood and urine. This test identifies and assesses protein abnormalities that may indicate various health issues. Our expert team uses the latest technology to deliver reliable results. Despite our high-quality service, the cost of protein electrophoresis remains affordable.
About the analysis
Normally, only a small amount of protein is excreted in the urine each day. However, certain diseases or conditions can cause increased protein excretion or the presence of unusual proteins in the urine. Electrophoresis and immunoelectrophoresis are methods used to analyze urine proteins by separating them based on their properties. These techniques can identify proteins that may indicate specific health issues.
Who should undergo urine protein electrophoresis?
Urine protein electrophoresis is used as part of the diagnostic process and monitoring for conditions associated with abnormal protein levels in the blood or increased protein levels in the urine.
This test is recommended for individuals showing signs and symptoms of diseases related to altered protein production, such as liver disease, kidney disease, multiple myeloma, and plasmacytoma. Urine protein electrophoresis helps identify decreased or increased levels of proteins or albumin in the urine, providing valuable information for diagnosis and monitoring appropriate therapy.
Interpretation of results
Decreased values are not clinically significant.
The presence of Bence-Jones protein in the urine can indicate multiple myeloma, a malignancy of certain white blood cells, but it rarely appears in the urine without malignancy.
Increased levels of albumin in the urine are linked to kidney damage, which can result from conditions such as nephrotic syndrome, malaria, systemic lupus erythematosus, diabetes, high blood pressure, amyloidosis, and post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis.
When the kidney tubules are damaged, proteins such as β2-microglobulin, retinol-binding protein, α1-microglobulin, α1-acid glycoprotein, and lysozyme may be found in the urine.
Amylase can be detected in the urine during inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis).

Preparation: For this analysis, urine is collected over a 24-hour period using specific containers. Begin by emptying your bladder in the morning, but do not collect this initial sample. Start collecting urine from that point onward, continuing until the same time the next morning. Be sure to note the time of the first morning urination. Collect all urine passed during the day and night in the container. The final sample should be collected at the same time the following morning. It is crucial to avoid losing any urine and ensure the entire amount is collected in the container. After the collection period is complete, bring the total amount of urine to the laboratory for analysis.
