IntroLab, a leading biochemical laboratory in Belgrade, enables you to determine the presence of Yersinia Enterocolitica cultures in stool through a precise bacterial stool examination.
What is Yersinia enterocolitica?
Yersinia Enterocolitica is a gram-negative bacterium that can cause infections of the human digestive tract. This bacterium is most commonly transmitted by consuming contaminated food, especially meat, or water contaminated with fecal material.
What are the indications?
Indications for analysis may include:
- Symptoms of gastrointestinal infections: Analysis is recommended for individuals showing symptoms of gastrointestinal infections such as abdominal pain, diarrhea (sometimes with blood), nausea, vomiting, or elevated temperature.
- Food or water contamination: Individuals who have consumed food or water suspected of being contaminated with Yersinia Enterocolitica bacteria may be referred for this analysis to check for the presence of infection.
- Epidemiological circumstances: In cases of epidemics or outbreaks of Yersinia Enterocolitica infections, analysis may be recommended to determine the presence and prevalence of this bacterium in the population.
What does the sampling look like?
A sample of fresh unformed stool is required. The sample should be collected in a sterile container provided by our laboratory. It is important to collect the sample from the middle part of the stool and avoid touching the inner surfaces of the container or contaminating the sample with urine or toilet water.
After collecting the sample, deliver it to our laboratory as soon as possible so we can begin the analysis. In the laboratory, we will cultivate the stool sample on specific nutrient media that support the growth of Yersinia Enterocolitica. After incubation, our expert staff will perform a microbiological examination of the stool and identify the presence of Yersinia Enterocolitica cultures.
Interpretation of stool analysis results for the presence of Yersinia Enterocolitica bacteria
A negative analysis result indicates that the presence of Yersinia Enterocolitica bacteria was not detected in the stool sample. This may mean that the person does not have an active infection with this bacterium or that the level of bacteria is below the detection limit of the analysis method.
A positive analysis result indicates that a certain amount of this bacterium is present in the stool. This may indicate an active infection. In such cases, further assessment of symptoms, clinical picture, and confirmation of diagnosis by a doctor are necessary.
