Urine analysis
The 24-hour urine protein test is a non-invasive test that measures the amount of protein excreted in urine over a 24-hour period. Available at IntroLab, this test is essential for diagnosing and monitoring conditions related to kidney function, diabetes, and high blood pressure.
About proteins and their excretion
Healthy kidneys filter proteins from the blood and reabsorb them back into the bloodstream, while other waste materials are expelled through urine. When kidneys are not functioning properly, proteins may not be reabsorbed and are instead excreted in the urine. This condition is known as proteinuria, albuminuria, or microalbuminuria.
How to perform the 24-hour urine protein test
To perform this test, you need to collect all urine excreted over a 24-hour period. Start in the morning, but do not include the first urination. Collect every subsequent urination in one or more containers over the next 24 hours. Keep the containers in a cool place, and then deliver them to the laboratory for analysis.
Preparing for the test
Your doctor will give you specific instructions for preparing for the test. You may need to avoid exercise for a period before the test. Inform your doctor if you have a fever or have been ill recently. They will also advise if you need to stop taking any medications on the day of the test. Make sure to tell your doctor about all medications, vitamins, and supplements you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and any illegal substances.
Interpretation of results
Results are expressed in milligrams (mg). For adults, a normal protein level in urine is less than 150 mg over a 24-hour period. Elevated protein levels can indicate kidney damage or nephrological diseases.
Risks
The test is entirely safe, with no associated risks, as it involves normal urination.
Factors affecting test results
Various medications can impact test results, including antibiotics, vitamin C supplements, and some drugs for Parkinson’s disease. Fever, dehydration, intense exercise, severe stress, or exposure to cold temperatures just before the test can also affect results. Additionally, collecting too much or too little urine can lead to inaccurate results.
Cost of the proteins in 24-hour urine
At IntroLab, a biochemical laboratory in Belgrade, the cost of the 24-hour urine protein test is 400.00 RSD.

Reverse time: 1 day
Preparation: To prepare for a 24-hour urine collection, you need one or more 2-liter containers. Discard the first morning urine and do not collect it. Collect all subsequent urine throughout the day and night in the container. Include the first morning urine of the next day in the container. Deliver the entire collected urine to the laboratory for analysis. For some tests, a preservative needs to be added to the container, so ask the laboratory for specific instructions.
